Heart-to-Heart; Tilly Greene

My name is Tilly Greene and I’m an erotic romance author – boy, does that sound like a confession or what. Anyway, yes, I delve into a variety of sub-genres, themes and heat levels, and all with romance at the core. The twisting passionate path they take to each other intrigues me and I don’t make it easy for them either. My characters aren’t perfect, they make mistakes, and life often throws in a couple of bumps as well, but it’s how they face them that make it interesting.

What does all that mean? Well, in And She Scores, there are plenty of bumps and twists. The Santa Ana winds are whipping up the heat, wildfires are raging, and two people who used to date are about to meet again – on camera! There are a few problems for Patrick Conway, a professional football player, and Sarah Winters, a reporter, to navigate through, and when the heart is involved, you know it won’t be easy.

Now, something else I like to do with a story is put the reader there, on sight, no matter where it happens to be. And She Scores, is set in Southern California and the couple take a walk along the beach and eat at a restaurant, both things I’ve done many times before, and thought to share with others. I’ve also done this in other books, like “Highland Heat” and London, “Taming Marie Antoinette” and Paris, and the series An Invitation to the World and India, to name a few. I like to call these visits to another place a snippet of voyeur tourism amidst an erotic romance.

There you go, a hint of what I write, and to follow is a hint of me:

Describe a moment that really tugged at your heart.
There are many, both happy and sad tugs, that happen all the time, too many to pick just one. When my cutie surprises me with a mug of hot chocolate, topped with mini marshmallows, it’s an excellent tug. When a friend receives a call from her son in Afghanistan to check in, it’s a tear jerking fantastic tug. When a nephew, who is a teen, cracking voice and all, asks to go out to lunch with you, it’s a fabulous tug. I enjoy those moments.

What type of movies make you cry? When was the last time you cried in a movie?
I’m easy to tear up while watching films. The last one was “Up” – a Pixar animation – and I watched it on an airplane. Yes, I cried, ran out of tissues, and was stuck sniffling until the bathroom was free. It’s a great film, very creatively put together, and also rather romantic.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your stories?
I find it interesting that, as a kid, I was told by a teacher to write a paper – say 5 pages – and I thought the world was ending. I could never write that much stuff, but I somehow managed in the end. Then, in college, I read a handful of books a week, wrote papers – let’s say 10 pages – and was often shocked to turn them in. The length no longer mattered, it was the quantity that was the challenge. Today, there’s no trauma or drama that I used to feel when it came to writing. It flows and I call it my job – the best I’ve ever had. It’s funny how life twists about on us.

Are your characters inspired by real people or events?
Some are and it’s interesting to take reality and twist it around while maintaining what drew me there in the first place. When the organizers of Wimbledon, the tennis competition in England, a few years ago announced women would have the same prize money as men, I was surprised. While I enjoy tennis, it never dawned on me that the prizes weren’t the same. Interesting, but what had my writer’s antennae working overtime was when some male players came out and publically stated they didn’t think it was fair. They played harder and longer than the women. When the shock dissipated, I wrote “Zandia” a futuristic about sexual equality, and the ladies come out the winners.

What do you enjoy reading? Can you name your five favorite authors?
I read everything! There are too many places to visit through a book to turn away from one. Lately, I’ve found some interesting non-fictions, but if I’m looking for an escape, then I’ll go with a Mystery, Romance or SF/Fantasy. I don’t do “favorite” authors, but for Christmas, the books I asked for and received were by Kelley Armstrong, Linda Fairstein, Tess Gerritsen [my fist one by her] and Laurell K Hamilton, and the first book I bought in 2010 was Stella and Audra Price’s latest release.

To discover what happens between Patrick and Sarah before that first football game of the pre-season, you’ll need to visit All Romance or OmniLit, and pick up a copy of And She Scores,. And, when you do that, remember all proceeds will be given to the American Heart Association. What a great way to enjoy an erotic romance.

Heart-to-Heart: Cat Johnson

Hello Daily Dosers and our lovely hostess Heather. Thanks for having me. I’m author Cat Johnson and my story Private Lies is part of All Romance eBooks’ 28 Days of Heart series which benefits the American Heart Association. I was also lucky enough to be involved on the other side of the action, working with the staff at ARe to coordinate the project. It has been amazingly fulfilling, which makes it very easy to gush about the project here today! Below is a little about me, the project, my story, and just stuff in general.

What is the most romantic thing that you've ever done?
This is a total sappy movie moment, but it was when I got off a plane and saw my boyfriend waiting for me at the gate. I was so excited and happy to see him that I ran, dropped my carryon, jumped up and wrapped my arms and legs around him. The romantic part was that I wasn’t even aware I’d done that until after all the hugging and kissing when I discovered I had to put my feet back on the ground to stand. I was oblivious because I was so consumed by just being in his arms. Okay, I know, sappy. I warned you!

What type of movies make you cry? When was the last time you cried in a movie?
I’ll cry just as quickly over a happy ending as I will over a sad one. I think the last movie that made me cry was “The Blind Side” with Sandra Bullock. The very end when they show pictures of the real people the story was written about made me cry because it was so touching and such a happy ending. I also think I teared up during “Julie and Julia”; the scene when Julia Child finally gets her book published. Yeah, I know, I’m a sap.

Share a little about why you chose to participate in 28 Days of the Heart.
I’ve found in my life that although I don’t have a ton of money to donate to worthy causes, I do have other things I can do. I’ve donated my time, and also my services as a harpist, to various charitable organizations, and I’ve donated my writing. It’s the least I can do.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating this story?
Supporting the American Heart Association was the main reason for my submitting the story, but what I didn’t realize, what was a total surprise, was how much I’d get out of it myself. The way the romance community has risen in support of this project is absolutely amazing and makes me proud to be a part of it. (Damn, I’m tearing up. Told you I was a sap!)

Are your characters inspired by real people or events?
I probably shouldn’t say this because no one character in Private Liesis actually based on a real person, but the entire setting is taken from my experiences. I put myself through college tending bar at a country club in Westchester County, on top of waiting tables at a few other upscale clubs in the area, so I was well versed in the country club scene but from the inside (where all the good stuff is! LOL). So yeah, Private Lies has a lot of truth in it, mixed with the fiction. It’s up to you to figure out which is which.

It was fun writing Private Lies about that time in my life. Lately I’ve been so engrossed in writing my military romance and cowboy romance for Samhain Publishing that it’s all research and fact checking, but this story was just from me.

Private Lies
Sex. Lies. It's all in a day's work.

Jax Monroe is ready to swear off both sex and men forever. Then she meets the new hot bartender Shane Reynolds and the only thing she can think about is sex and him.

Why not have a little fun? After all, she deserves it, and Shane proves he can provide what she needs. Only Jax doesn’t realize something. Shane the sexy barman is far more than just the stud he appears to be.

Cat Johnson

February is going to be a busy month and I’m sure I’ll be all over the web promoting because Bucked (Studs in Spurs, Book 2) releases just days before Private Lies. That’s okay, I like busy! Hope to see you all around the web and thanks for stopping by.

Heart-to-Heart: Marcia James

As our 28 Days of the Heart blog tour continues, we go heart-to-heart with author Marcia James. Her novella Love Unleashed releases on February 25th. James lost her mother to a heart attack last year and her participation in the 28 Days of the Heart contributes to a wonderful cause. Take the time to get to know this terrific lady.

What type of movies make you cry? When was the last time you cried in a movie?
I tend to tear up at Hallmark commercials, so remembering the last time I cried in a movie is tough. I’m a sucker for sentimental things. So any movie with a heartwarming moment is going to get a watery response from me. ;-) I try to avoid any movies labeled “tearjerkers” so I don’t become dehydrated! Ironically one of the most romantic moments in a movie ever—in my humble opinion—was in the 1995 decidedly unromantic movie Outbreak. There’s a scene toward the end between Dustin Hoffman and Renee Russo that is the epitome of love.

Share a little about why you chose to participate in 28 Days of the Heart.
The American Heart Association (AHA) is a wonderful nonprofit organization fighting for an important cause. I’ve participated in their Go Red for Women event since its inception. Then, in 2009, my mother passed away from a heart attack. When All Romance eBooks announced it was holding a contest for published authors to submit a short story for an AHA fundraiser, I knew I had to enter. And I’m thrilled my story, Love Unleashed, was one of the 28 stories chosen for the campaign.

What do you enjoy reading? Can you name your five favorite authors?
I read (and listen to books-on-C D) in a wide range of romance subgenres, as well as mystery/suspense. I tend to avoid bloody or depressing books, however, and gravitate toward romantic comedy. Picking my favorite five authors is almost impossible, but here are five (in alphabetical order) I can highly recommend:

  • Susan Andersen

  • Suzanne Brockmann

  • Susan Elizabeth Phillips

  • Nora Roberts

  • Patricia Sargeant

Reading romance reduces stress and can help relax you from your worries. Do you feel that writing romance helps you cope with your own worries and stress?

Yes, definitely! I really enjoy imagining a romantic story, fleshing it out on the computer, adding humor and the love scenes. Especially adding the love scenes! ;-) Having the opportunity to explore my creative side is empowering, and writing feel-good books with guaranteed happy endings is a wonderful way to let go of worries and stress.

Have you become more or less romantic since you began your writing journey?

Spending time dreaming up romantic plots and heartwarming or sexy scenes definitely has an influence on one’s personal life. ;-) That said, my husband and I have always been fond of romantic gestures—leaving mushy messages on each other’s voicemail, hiding love notes where the other will find them. We also celebrate the 13th of every month since we were married on May 13th. But writing about a hero and heroine’s struggle for their happily ever after does put one in a romantic mood.

Love Unleashed

His best laid plans...
DJ “Rabid Ron” Hart has a grand scheme to win back the woman he loves. It involves an animal adoption fair, a goofy hairless dog named Charlie and an offer she can’t refuse.

Her hidden desires...
Cara Wilson has fantasies she’s never admitted, and her ex-boyfriend still features in her erotic dreams. If only he didn’t keep his bad-boy urges so tightly leashed.

Tonight they’ll learn that winning sometimes takes losing control.

Marcia James

Marcia James writes hot, humorous romances and finaled in eleven romance writing contests before selling her first comic romantic suspense, At Her Command, to Cerridwen Press. In June 2009, her short story, "Rescue Me", appeared in Tails of Love, a Berkley benefit anthology. In Feb. 2010, Love Unleashed, her next short story, will be released as part of All Romance eBooks' 28 Days of Heart campaign.

Marcia is an advertising copywriter and marketing consultant, and she presents author promotion workshops. In her eclectic career, she has shot submarine training videos, organized celebrity-filled nonprofit events and had her wedding covered by People Magazine. After years of dealing with such sexy topics as how to safely install traffic lights, Marcia is enjoying “researching” her novels with her husband and hero of many years. Saturday Smackdown Sexy Brothers

Does sexy run in families? On television and in novels, it certainly seems to. Numerous romantic series focus on families of great looking men with vibrant, desirable personalities. On television, we lust after them, often comparing the brothers and what makes them hawt and hawter. For today's smackdown, we are going to pick the sexiest brothers. You, of course, are welcome to nominate brothers not on this list. Here are some of the sexiest brothers I've watched on television or read about in books.

The Salvatore Brothers
Damon and Stefan Salvatore make dead look good. Damon is the wild child, cynical, dark and dangerous. Stefan is the kinder brother, the brooder who lets his past haunt him even as he tries to reconcile his vampiric nature to living as a human.

The Winchester Brothers
Raised as hunters by their dad, Dean and Sam Winchester battle darkness in others and in themselves. Dean knows no other life and acts as much a father figure to his baby brother as he does older brother. He is driven to continue the hunt and keep it going. Sam tried to run away from that life, to live a normal one, but the yellow-eyed demon came for his girlfriend and drove him back to the life on the road with his brother.

McDoctors on Grey's
Derek Shepherd and Mark Sloan are the best of friends and their relationship has certainly survived many knocks over the years, particularly the one involving Sloan sleeping with Addison. However, McDreamy and McSteamy need each other. They have different ways of approaching problems and life, but they balance each other well. Currently dating a pair of sisters, they may end up as brothers after all.

The Katallakis Brothers
Vane, Fang and Fury are three brothers from the same litter of Katagaria and Arcadian bloodlines. Powerful in their own rights, they are extremely devoted to the women in their lives. Vane is the oldest of the three and the most powerful. He is gifted as a Sentinel, which means messing with him, or his family is a huge mistake.

The Buchanan Brothers
Popular leading men in Julie Garwood's contemporary novels, the Buchanans are deeply involved in law enforcement. Nick and Alec are both in the FBI while Dylan is a police officer and Theo is a federal attorney. Their younger brothers have yet to make it into their own novels, but Michael is in Navy Seal training and that's sexy.

The Walker Brothers

Kevin, Tommy and Justin are strong brothers who have their own issues. Kevin's gay, Tommy's on the run from his mistakes and Justin's a struggling veteran of Iraq coping with his drug abuse in the past and medical school in his future. They're devoted to each other and even at their craziest; you know they'll be there when they're needed.

The Awesome Brothers
Chuck Bartowski and his brother in law Devon Woodcomb are close, particularly since Devon learned Chuck's secret. But even before Devon knew Chuck was a spy, he loved his wife's kid brother and looked out for him. Chuck nicknamed him "awesome" for all the awesome things the doctor does, but Devon is a good person and so is Chuck.

Who's your pick for sexy brother? Comment for a chance to win a copy of Nikki Duncan's Sounds to Die By which just so happens to have some sexy brothers in it of her own. I'll pick a winner next Saturday and be sure to drop by on February 21st when Nikki, herself, drops by for a visit to the Daily Dose.

Mari Carr and Mad About Meg

Writing a book was number one on Mari Carr’s bucket list and on her thirty-fourth birthday, she set out to see that goal achieved. Now her computer is jammed full of stories — novels, novellas, short stories and dead-ends and many of her books have been published. Mari found time for writing by squeezing it into the hours between 3 a.m. and daybreak when her family is asleep and the house is quiet.

What is the most romantic thing that you've ever done?
Everything I’ve learned about romance has been due to the fact I’ve watched a truly great one up close and personal for my entire life. My parents have a genuine, beautiful marriage. For their fortieth wedding anniversary, I created a slide show with pictures of all their years together and set it to Alan Jackson’s song, Remember When. They both cried and they’ve watched it many, many times since.

What type of movies make you cry? When was the last time you cried in a movie?
Oh gosh! Everything makes me cry. I’m far too sentimental! My favorite ‘sad’ movies are typically not romance stories, but more along the lines of friend stories. Steel Magnolias, Forrest Gump, and Beaches all still have the power to provoke tears!

If could live in any century previous to the 20th, what century would it be and why?
My introduction to romance was actual in the historical genre. I discovered Stephanie Lauren’s Cynster novels. After that first book, I was bitten by the bug of regency romances and I feel confident in saying I’ve read literally hundreds of books from that time period. I’m fascinated by the early 19th century in England. There’s just something so romantic about dashing dukes and earls and balls.

Share a little about why you chose to participate in 28 Days of the Heart.
I saw the call for submissions and my immediate thought was FINALLY. I don’t consider myself to have many talents and because I have a full-time day job and two very active teenagers at home, my time is also limited. I desperately wanted to be able to contribute something to very worthy cause. I lost both my grandfathers to heart attacks, as well as a close friend of the family. To think one of my stories could possibly help this cause is humbling.

What do you enjoy reading? Can you name your five favorite authors?
Romance, romance and oh yeah, romance. It’s safe to say I read what I write! I would even go a bit farther and say the spicier the romance, the better. I have lots of favorite authors, so limiting it to five is tough. I adore Diana Gabaldon, Janet Evanovich, and Jayne Rylon’s romances. I also have to admit to being a huge Harry Potter and Twilight fan, so JK Rowling and Stephenie Meyer would round out my five.

Reading romance reduces stress and can help relax you from your worries. Do you feel that writing romance helps you cope with your own worries and stress?
I actually started writing romance when stress from work took over my life. I went through a period of insomnia and to pass the wee hours of morning, I started writing down my stories. I found the more I wrote, the less stress I tended to feel. Writing is my ultimate escape.
